The generous support of some of our sponsors permits us to award a limited number of attendance scholarships to the most exceptional applicants.

Applicants are advised to note that these scholarships are designated only for those who will otherwise be unable to attend the Summer University without such assistance. Applying for a scholarship should thus only be an option if you genuinely cannot afford to attend, despite your enthusiasm, without our financial support. Naturally, given limited resources, we must apply stricter criteria to the admission of scholarship applicants. Hence, while we aim to make this experience as accessible to as many African students as possible, scholarship applicants should nevertheless bear in mind that their need for financial aid may become a factor in the admission process should our funds come under pressure. This is not to discourage genuinely needy applicants from applying at all, but rather reflects our desire to be candid about the situation.

For the most exceptional candidates, we offer a full scholarship covering tuition and accommodation. A partial travel bursary may be available depending on circumstances. We may choose to award a number of partial scholarships on our discretion.

Scholarship applicants should not use the online form. They should take the following steps, which constitute an application for an IMANI Summer University Fellowship (ISUF).

Send in the body of a single email to the Scholarships Secretary, Bright B. Simons.

  • A brief (about five lines) formal letter indicating a wish to apply for an IMANI fellowship. State in the letter that you agree to all the rules and regulations of the Summer University and that every assertion you make in your fellowship application is true.
  • A two-page (maximum) resume or curriculum vitae listing clearly your greatest achievements (in your view) to date, as well as the relevant academic, extra-curricular and professional (if any) credentials. Please include contact details and date of birth.
  • A 400-word essay identifying a public policy (legislation, regulation, foreign policy initiative, etc.) of the present or immediate past government for critique on the grounds of whether it contributes to a) the growth of a free society or b) equitable society. Explain succinctly why you think it achieves freedom rather than equity, or vice versa, and how in your view it therefore contributes to prosperity or not.
  • A email address or fax number of an academic or professional referee, whom we may approach for a reference. Please state name, position and address, and your relationship to him or her.
  • All scholarship applicants should note that they might be contacted for a email, phone or face-to-face interview.
  • We reserve the right to verify all credentials submitted, or to ask you to substantiate any claims made in your application. Any instance of plagiarism, if proved, will lead to automatic withdrawal of benefits.
